Dr. Headman Encourages Anxiety Sufferers to Get Help
SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - June 5, 2017
Dr. Neil Headman, a licensed mental health professional, says too many people with anxiety fail to seek professional help, even though effective treatment is available. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 30% of the population will suffer an anxiety disorder at sometime during their life, yet nearly two thirds of those will not get adequate treatment.
Although everyone experiences anxiety symptoms from time to time, people with anxiety disorders experience symptoms that are much more severe and debilitating. Some common symptoms of anxiety disorders include: intense worry, fatigue, irritability, muscle tension, racing thoughts, feelings of panic, difficulties with sleep, reduced ability to concentrate, and social avoidance. When these symptoms are severe they can significantly interfere with a person’s life.
Fortunately, effective treatments are within reach for almost anyone. “So much of the suffering associated with anxiety disorders can be reduced or eliminated with effective treatment,” Dr. Headman reports. “Many people who participate in treatment can experience improvement after just a few sessions.” The rate of improvement depends on a variety of factors, such as the initial severity of symptoms, the patient’s level of participation, and the provider’s level of expertise.
Dr. Headman emphasizes the importance of selecting a provider with advanced training and experience in treating anxiety. “Do not seek help from a novice for a problem that is better addressed by an expert,” he says, “Although most counselors and therapists can help with moderate anxiety, individuals who are experiencing severe symptoms of anxiety may want to get help from a more experienced provider.”
People who could benefit from professional help may avoid getting it for a variety of reasons. Some are unsure how to find a qualified counselor or therapist, others worry treatment will be too expensive, while still others are anxious about the entire idea of treatment. Fortunately, information about most mental health providers can be found online, and most of those providers would gladly answer questions about their services. Finally, while it is true that counseling services can be expensive, most insurance plans will cover some or all of the costs. Additional payment options are made available by most providers.
Although it might be intimidating to get started, Dr. Headman encourages those who suffer from anxiety to seek professional help. “There is no need to suffer alone when real help is available. Getting help from a professional may be one of the best decisions you can make for yourself and those you love.”
